This was the second time we have stayed here. It was very comfortable, with great food and central location. Very clean and newly decorated. Lots of off-road parking. Extensive food menu and great atmosphere.

We really enjoyed our night at the White Lion. I only booked a couple of days before our stay and although I'd visited the hotel previously for a meal, I'd forgotten just how good the food was. Very reasonably priced menu, all home cooked and huge portions. We both ordered lamb shank which was cooked to perfection, but which neither of us could finish! The staff were all very friendly and helpful, even though we arrived at the busiest time. The room was spotless and comfortable. Just a slight hiccup on the website which states that a double room is just for one person - so I did call to check that it was OK that there were two of us before booking.

The staff were all helpful and friendly, room was very clean and tidy. Plenty of room in bar / lounge area, with plenty of visitors. Meals were good, recommend the homemade steak and Guinness pie. Plenty of parking at the rear too.

Room was clean bright and modern with tea, coffee, hair dryer etc. However it would definitely benefit from a mirror in the bedroom, as there was only one in the bathroom, making it difficult for 2 people to get ready quickly with showering hair and make up to with just the one mirror between you.

My en-suite double was very clean and quite spacious. The area was quiet so there wasn’t much noise with the window open. The bar served food up to 9pm so we could eat when we arrived quite late, and there is a large selection on the breakfast menu.

We were in Room 1. The bed is too big for the room as you cannot open the wardrobe doors fully. Also the only mirror is in the bathroom, one over the desk would be handy.Staff and service excellant.

The family room was a good size, clean and well equipped including a well-stocked coffee station.Location was a short walk from the station, handy for our trip from London and on to the North Coast. If we'd known the town clock outside would chime every 15 mins we might have asked for a room at the back of the hotel, but know this feature is outside the hotel control.

We enjoyed a comfortable night's stay at The White Lion hotel Machynlleth. The family room was excellent. It was clean, modern and catered for all of our needs. The hotel is situated in a perfect location close to the surrounding shops, cafes etc in the town center. It is located near to the clock tower,(we thought the chimes of the bell might keep us awake) however it didn't affect our sleep one bit. Friendly welcoming staff. We enjoyed our stay at the white lion, and would highly recommend to anyone considering booking.

Just home after a two night stay at the excellent White Lion. Room very tidy and clean on arrival, with an en-suite of a considerably higher quality than some we have stayed in. Proper walk-in shower much appreciated.Comfortable beds gave a good night’s sleep and a decent sized TV meant no squinting to see a small image yards away.Breakfast both mornings of the highest quality, and the dinner we had on our first night was beautifully prepared, tasty and a great credit to the kitchen that prepared it.Staff consistently cheerful, attentive and friendly, the bar welcoming and comfortable with reasonably priced drinks. As you might guess, we loved it and will certainly be back next time we are in town.Big thanks to all concerned - a credit to the owners.

Great stay at the White Lion - lovely new room, very comfy bed, good sized bathroom. Room could have done with a chair. WiFi which was important and had phoned to check was was poor. Evening food was great, good choice, served quickly and hot and very tasty - some choices perhaps a little pricey. Breakfast was superb!

The White Lion is a pleasantly busy pub/ hotel in a quiet town. Serves food all day from an endless menu, supported by the friendly helpful staff. Rooms were obviously recently refurbished to a good standard & had all the facilities needed. Plenty of off road parking and the location gives easy access to both the north and south of the excellent countryside. It was a comfortable & enjoyable stay.

Room was spacious and reasonably well-equipped. Bed was comfortable and there was plenty of hot water, at decent pressure, in the shower. Scaffolding outside my window was a bit off-putting, but no-one seemed to be working on it, so not a problem. Dinner was fine: fairly standard pub food. I had to leave early so couldn’t wait for breakfast: a tray of cold stuff (eg cereal, breakfast bars, fruit juice) would have been nice.

We stayed at the White Lion for three nights whilst we were trail riding with a group of friends.Having stayed here before we knew that the car park was huge and it was a great place to meet with the rest of the riders. Five of the group also came and had breakfast and an evening meal at the White Lion. Our room was a good size and everything was clean. We had an ensuite shower room which was useful but the bathrooms and toilets on the landing always looked clean too.The staff as ever were friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were huge and included in our room rate. The evening meal menu offered a variety of choices at reasonable pub prices.Overall excellent value for money

We enjoyed our stay at The White Lion, but with one caveat. We had reserved a 'luxury double' and were given room10 - a triple room (not much point as there were two of us) which lacked a dressing table or in fact, any chairs, although the room was spacious enough to have taken both.It was, of course, nothing like the room portrayed on your web site. However, as retired hoteliers, we must compliment you on your friendly staff, the breakfast and the speed and efficiency of your service at dinner, despite being particularly busy. We come to Machynlleth quite regularly, so perhaps the next time we will telephone first, to try to ensure that we are given a proper double room - should there be one available.Kind regards.R.CORDER.

We were in room 5 which seemed newly refurbished. Shower and beds themselves were great but a few extra bits are needed. Eg door hooks or hooks near door, another bedside table and lamps for both, narrow unit or shelf near door. There was nowhere to put anything which was frustrating as the rest was so nice!Bar and evening food and breakfast were all great!

The bedroom had been recently refurbished and very acceptable. The evening meal was split between a good lamb dish and a very poor chilli which was bland and very disappointing, I would recommend too stay clear of this dish. The breakfast was of good quality if you want a hot cooked breakfast. No issues with the overnight car parking.

As soon I pulled up on the motorcycle I was made to feel welcome, was allowed to park bike up next to the kitchens door around the back which was out the way and out of view. We then entered the pub and made to feel welcome from the locals. The pub was busy due to some sports on with a egg ball.We checked in then dropped our things of in our room. The room was clean, with coffee tea and a big TV.We then went down stairs to have a beer.Due to everyone including the staff that night making us feel welcome we stayed for a few to many beers. We had our tea in the pub, which is proper pub grub. After a good night sleep, we had breakfast with options for all.I had coffee, cornflakes, then a big breakfast. You know it's a good breakfast wen it comes with black pudding. If me and wife went out that morning to eat breakfast it would cost us 10 pound each. Are room was 65 pound take 20 off for breakfast 45 pound for 2 people is definitely not a bad price for a great night.I would stop again.

After the four of us rode at Dyfi bike park we stayed at the white lion Hotel in Machynlleth. It was exactly what we wanted and hoped for. The rooms were good and excellent value. The atmosphere in the pub was superb so we had a few drinks and then ordered some food which was very nice with good sized portions. All of the staff were friendly and we also enjoyed the breakfast before we checked out. Will definitely stay here again.

The waiter was very friendly and made us feel welcome. In fact all the staff were very friendly. The room was in need of an update but in keeping with the age of the hotel. Would stay again!

We had food in the evening which was excellent and really good choice. After a great nights sleep, the breakfast was very good too, friendly staff and so helpful. Choice of cooked, toast, yoghurt, cereal etc.Really enjoyed our stay and will def stay there again. Perfect location for Dyfi Bike Park plus plenty space for parking van. A1.

I needed somewhere to sleep in this area at only a few days' notice. Although I don't normally book accommodation with shared bathrooms, I could find virtually none of that at a reasonable price close to where I needed to be, so booked here after reading good reviews. I had a double room on the top (second) floor, which was quite large, clean and with a comfortable bed. Bathrooms right opposite also clean - there was one with a toilet and shower and one with a toilet and bath. Only minor negative point was that the washbasin in my room and the shower opposite were very slow to drain (the latter was full after I'd finished my shower), and toilet cistern was very slow to refill. Inside it was very quiet (no noisy guests coming and going), although my room looked out onto the main street with a bus stop opposite (I hadn't realised idling buses could be so loud!) and I'd left the window slightly open.Breakfast is normally served from 8am, but I needed to be somewhere by 8.15am so, having asked in advance (and they confirmed in advance), it was available at 7.30am - and the cooked breakfast was quick to arrive, and quite substantial (kept me going until late afternoon). (Lighter options were available - there was a menu.) I didn't have an evening meal here, but last orders, I was told, were at 8.50pm. Bar serves real ale - they had four on.I'd stay here again.

The White Lion is at the centre crossroads in Machynlleth so a great location. There was ample free parking. The railway station is on the picturesque Cambrian line and therefore you can use this to travel to a number of wonderful places, without worrying about parking problems. The breakfasts were very good and the staff helpful and friendly.Although the decor is tired, it didn’t diminish my satisfaction since it was clean and inexpensive. We have stayed at the White Lion on 5 separate occasions. Staff are always friendly and efficient, there is a free large car park and always a hearty breakfast cooked to order. Each room is different in size and decor and the room size is reflected in the price. There’s a good supply of tea and coffee with biscuits provided and basic toiletries. We will be staying again at some point in the future.

The hotel was centrally located with plenty of parking spaces and they are dog friendly which is important to us. We were allocated a Family room so there was plenty of space for us and the room had everything we needed. The bed was comfortable so we slept well. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the service was good. We ate in on both evenings and had the full Welsh Breakfast each morning and the food was very good so we enjoyed our stay. The decor was a bit tired looking in places but with Covid restrictions affecting trade, this is probably to be expected. The building is old and does not really lend itself to being ultra modern inside and it would probably lose some of its charm if this was done. However, it was very clean and we felt protected as far as Covid was concerned. We did think that it was strange that as a hotel guest we had to pay for everything up front and there was no tab set up for the room but we understand that the hotel had had an incident and were protecting themselves from further loss.Would stay again if we were in the area.

We arrived after a good days mtbing and walking with 2 dogs,we were given the key to out room and covid regs explained. The room is quite basic, the beds were uncomfortable and the single was broken, there was 2 small cups and there was 3 of us but it was clean and would do for a night. The marquee outside was fun, the beer was cold and the food great, The waitress serving at our table was fab. The breakfast was very good and they were very generous in supplying the dogs a sausage and bacon each, the staff on at breakfast were great as well. So in all a good trip out after lockdown
Reviewer: Carole W | Mon 24th May 2021 | 3 years ago
With COVID in mind, there was very little interaction with any members of staff. The hotel team have clearly thought about how to manage their guests needs well, leaving arrival details at the door and breakfast ordering forms in the room which were collected from the corridor outside the room. Breakfast (which was excellent) arrived on piping hot plates delivered by a really friendly member of staff.

First impressions weren't great. Tired and in need of tlc. Attention to detail poor, like broken coat hangers in a tired wardrobe. However, though small, room was very clean with plenty of towels. Bathroom without fault with a good powerful shower, though a toilet roll holder would be useful! We asked for more milk so that we could have a morning cuppa and were given plenty, with a smile. Breakfast was plentiful and excellent.....compliments to the chef and the waiters, who were attentive. To sum up, it was well worth the amount we paid.

Stayed at the White Lion for 3 nights. Staying away under covid restrictions is all a bit strange, but we felt safe here. The staff are amazing. Nothing was too much trouble and all were massively helpful, friendly and charming - especially the housekeeping lady and the lad serving breakfast (which was also very very good). Only slight improvement could be the removal of the gigantic wardrobe in our room (9) and the installation of a bigger tv - we thought we didn't have one at first it was so tiny. But a lovely stay in challenging times.

Fantastic value and lovely cosy setting. Can’t thank you enough for saving our evening. Had a fantastic weekend away at the white lion hotel, the staff were very friendly and helpful, rooms clean and tidy, and the complementary breakfast was really nice too, at night there is a really nice atmosphere in the bar/resteraunt with good music and great food.We were riding at dyfi bike which is 5mins drive up the road too so the location was great for us, will definitely be returning.

I had a wonderful stay very comfortable room etc I did not enjoy my breakfast as I ordered far too much so left a lot which is no reflection on the quality or service. As ever all businesses are reliant on the quality of their staff , from bar service to breakfast I found them superb , I will stop again soon

The room was as described, small double with en suite, clean but tired looking, could do with a fresh coat of paint but inadequate. Staff very friendly and pleasant made us feel very welcome. Really enjoyed the breakfasts, hot and good size portions. Would reccomend this as a good place to stay for it's locality and access to some fantastic walks.

We stayed here for 2 nights, has a decent sized car park at the rear of the hotel , we had a dog and unfortunately we were in room 9 which was about 2 floors up which was difficult for him. The room was a good size, the wardrobe was coming apart due to the floor being very uneven , otherwise nice clean and tidy. Breakfast is from 8-9:30 in the bar. Service was very good, the young man serving was excellent, very friendly and helpful and a credit to the hotel. The cooked breakfast was very good, a nice variety of items, all well cooked and good quality. The staff were all very friendly and chatty, and we enjoyed our stay here. The railway station is about 15 minutes walk away, giving you access to Aberystwyth to the south or north to Tywyn, Barmouth, Porthmadog etc. it’s well worth using the train going to visit these places as the line goes mainly very close to the sea with superb views, and much easier than the often very windy roads

I stayed at the White Lion whilst walking the Glyndwrs Way, so the location was ideal for me. Machynlleth is a logical stopover and the White Lion is right in the centre of town, so great for a look around if you don’t have a car. The pub has a friendly feel and the staff are lovely. My room was clean, comfy and quiet, the latter is a great bonus when staying at a pub. I didn’t have dinner at the pub so don’t know about the food overall but breakfast was very good. I enjoyed my stay and it was good value too.

We really enjoyed our stay overall; just one serious complaint. We were down for breakfast at 8.10, 1.5 hours before the 9.30 deadline when guests might still be eating. While we were eating the smell / fumes of cleaning fluid was very strong. We were at the table nearest the kitchen. It was not pleasant.

Four of us stayed here so as to be close the the RSPB and Osprey Centre. The food, breakfast and evening meals were excellent and the staff dealt with any request, no matter how small, very efficiently. The furniture in our room (9) could do with a bit of tlc but for two night we didn’t need to unpack so this wasn’t an issue. Plenty of parking at the back of the hotel. There are lots of cafes and other eating houses in close proximity and we would definitely recommend the new Meat House less than 100 yds from the hotel. If visiting Machynlleth again we would rebook at the White Lion without hesitation.

We travlled down from yorkshire to see a friend give a talk at MOMA Machynlleth and looking for somewhere to stay chose 'The White Lion Hotel' and what a good choice it was. The welcome on arrival was warm and friendly whilst at the same time very relaxed. Quickly checked in we were soon in our room and settled in for a chill out prior to a friend arriving and soemthing to eat in the restauarant before the talk. The menu offers a good choice and is good value. The ood arrived promptly and was hot and well presented. Just what was needed after a long journey. After the talk we returned to the bar for a drink or two and the atmosphere was great with a few of the loacl folks chatting, drinking and enjoy the match on tv together. A very enjoyable vening. Prior to checking out the following morning we took advantage of the breakfast and again the food came out quickly and was of equally good quality, once gain with a warm and friendly service. Overall we loved our stay and we are sure our next one will be for a longer period. Thank You to all for making our short visit so enjoyable.

Nice and simple inn with rooms, the staff are all nice and friendly and the cooked breakfast is very good. Bathroom is clean but difficult to find soap sometimes. Room was surprisingly quiet bare in mind its upstairs from the bar.Main downside is the cycle storage is a bit rubbish. Its a tiny store room full of furniture and you have to get a member of staff to open it. Can just about squeeze two bikes in there upright. Sort the bike cupboard out and we might come back!!Overall good value if you want a night in a lovely area.

The White Lion Hotel was very close to where we wanted and very reasonable. We were in a double room with shared bathroom, although we never saw anyone else use it. The White Lion is located within a few minutes walk of the railway station and is in the centre of Macynlleth. The twin room I had, although not on-suite was directly opposite the bath and shower rooms and had all the facilities I needed for my 2 night stay. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. The bar is lively with a pleasant atmosphere. The breakfast set me up for the day and all the staff are very pleasant, professional and keen to ensure the guests are made to feel welcome. I would certainly recommend the White Lion Hotel and look forward to staying there in the future.

The room I stayed in was more than big enough. It could have been a little bit warmer, but the bed was very comfortable and I slept well. On arrival I was checked in by a young man and told that y room was on the top floor. At this stage it would have been nice if he had offered to help me upstairs with my luggage but he didn't do this and it was a bit of a struggle getting to my room. I had asked for soya milk to be available and there was some in my room very soon after I arrived, without my prompting anyone. At breakfast the lady who served me was very friendly and attentive and I had enough to eat in spite of the fact that I don't do the dead pig on a plate kind of breakfast!

We arrived 2 hours early and our room was ready. It was a medium sized room with antique furniture and the bathroom was good sized with shower cubicle. It is a very old pub with uneven walls and creaky floor but was clean and the double bed was very comfortable. The TV was small and wall mounted but quite adequate. The hospitality tray was well stocked. Unlike other people I got Wi-fi immediately and once set up it was there each time I returned. The food was good pub food, hot and plentiful both at breakfast and dinner. The chips were lovely and the poached eggs were well cooked with runny yolk. The beer and lager was cold and well kept. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The pub is in a prime position on the main street and the market on Wednesday was really good. We were out just after 7am getting a newspaper and the stall holders were just arriving and setting up their own stalls... not like in my local market town where the council do the job. Every day of our 4 day stay the pub was full. We have never seen a pub with so many customers whether at lunchtime, mid afternoon or evening. A very enjoyable stay.

Your very successful hotel and restaurant has got the two most important points right: Competent staff and excellent customer relations! I also liked the fact that the room had a cosy, trendy feel and was individual and not like a hotel room! However, the very thin curtain and no secondary double glassing resulted in noise and light, waking me up early in the morning. My mattress had a dip in the middle (the one by the door) and the lights were not strong enough for my husband to read. The breakfast starters were very impressive, all food was in large portions and good. The fact that there is a bus stop right outside the hotel is excellent! Machynlleth is a good base for exploring beaches and castles by car and the town itself is pleasant. All the staff in the hotel and in the town were very helpful and friendly! I will recommend your establishment and would give you five stars, were it not for the light/window/bed issues.

An Inn in the real sense - not a hotel - where you register at the bar.Hospitable and, on the night of the Euro soccer Wales semi-final, a pretty chaotic community pub. The letting area is a bit jaded and in need of some investment /tlc but this mitigated by the warmth of the people. If you are looking for efficient anonymity it's probably not for you. The room was decent and the breakfast excellent. There is free parking and it is well placed for onward travel.Down sides include the lack of anything to do in town and pubs may not be the best entertainment for toddlers. However we knew that when we booked.Well worth a stay if you are passing.

I have now stayed at this little gem on two occasions. The rooms are always warm and clean with good provisions. On both occasions I have had a cracking night’s sleep. There is plenty of secure parking. But the real gem in the pub below, I’m early to bed and there has not been an issue with noise. The bar has a great selection of ales which are perfectly looked after and served. The menu is fantastic value for homemade lovely food with good portion size. The chips are just like my Nan used to make. The breakfast is top draw and I having been served by a number of different staff in the mornings and evenings and all have been lovely. All in all, the perfect little place for a night or two. I’ll be back again and as I stay in the area every four weeks can’t see me going anywhere else. Just hope not to many catch on to this place so I always get a room.

On the spur of the moment my wife said that she would like to visit the market at Machynlleth and as it is some distance from home we thought it a good idea to put up for one night. We looked at Booking.com who picked a several local places and as we have eaten at the White Lion on a number of occasions in the past we decided on that option.Good choice. Our room was spotless and comfortable and we would have no hesitation in booking again in future. Breakfast also was excellent. Only down was the steep and endless stairs but for anyone agile not a problem.Sadly it rained for out walk around the market but that is another story.

We all had a wonderful stay, we asked for an early check-in and this was honoured. The shower took ages to warm up, the staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. The children loved the room, quite spacious & beautifully decorated. Breakfast was just right, the waitress was a bit miserable, would've been nice if it was served with a smile!! Overall, a lovely short break

My wife and I recently stayed at the White Lion Hotel and had a fantastic time. We would just like to say that in addition to the warm and welcoming Hotel itself, the management and staff were just amazing! We are both Vegan and Gluten free and nothing was too much trouble for them. The hotel actually took time to research and source suitable food for us, this also included meeting the Chef and discussing items and ingredients. Honestly, nothing was too much trouble for them and they are all worthy of the highest praise, indeed one would be hard pressed to find better customer service anywhere! Highly recommended!!!

The White Lion makes an ideal base from which to explore this scenic region close to the sea and mountains, and handy for public transport. The accommodation is cosy but allowances need to be made for the age of the building if expecting a more modern design and layout. Good breakfast options while evening dining is very popular here with locals and visitors. There is a great range of ales as well as other drinks. The staff are friendly and helpful while the town itself is charming with several places of interest and a few other pubs to visit.

It is a nice pub in a pretty town. The part of the building that contains guest rooms is oldish/cheapish, so uneven walls, bad sound isolation, and narrow corridors... The rooms were appropriate for the pub hotel, clean. A bit too expensive for the price we paid. There was a band playing till very late, and you could clearly hear the words from the bedroom. We liked the music though! But may be not good for eldery or [less tired] kids. Breakfast was good.

A great stay here at the White Lion. We arrived to a friendly, busy atmosphere at the bar at lunch time. Dewi checked us in, very professional and friendly. The food smelt fab! We were pleasantly surprised with our modern, cosy hotel room. Felt very much like home. Very comfortable bed. The maid Alison stopped us in the corridor to and from breakfast to check everything was okay with our room, and asked if we needed any extra toilet rolls or towels!Breakfast was great - traditional, but something for everyone. We will definitely be returning. Thank you!

Right in the middle of Machynlleth - a very good, traditional British pub. The food (both evening and breakfast) were excellent. The staff were efficient, friendly and helpful - especially with helping us to store our bikes securely. The room was nicely presented - and everything in the room worked and was 100% clean/fresh.Plenty of tea and coffee (+ biscuits) in the room.We would definitely recommend/stay again. The relaxed but animated atmosphere suited us MUCH better than a traditional B+B in someone's house.

We stayed in the White Lion for one night since we had to visit Machynlleth at short notice and we are glad we did. I always consider what I paid for a room when leaving any review and in this case we got a superb deal with B and B for less than £50 between us. The en-suite room was exceptionally clean and well decorated with a comfortable bed and tv and our dog was made very welcome. We stayed in the hotel to eat, the bar and restaurant were obviously very popular and the food was very good value. We thought the White Lion's staff were amongst its best features- they were all exceptionally friendly and efficient and we will definitely stay here again next time we are in the area.

We were impressed with the food (good quality and quality at a reasonable price) and also with the all the staff, who were pleasant, helpful and professional. On both visits the water was only lukewarm and there were problems with the TV (including dead batteries in handset). The weather was hot and there was no aircon (other than opening the window). But, for the price, overall it was reasonable value for money.

We travelled to Machynlleth to attend Ska Africa at Y Plas and booked a Standard Room at The White Lion because camping didn't appeal! The room, although to be fair probably due for an update, was clean with a comfortable bed.Speaking to the landlady the next morning , revealed that they have plans to continue refurbishments of the accomodation.Bathroom facilities were plentiful directly opposite our room with choice of shower room, bathroom and an additional WC.The full breakfast both regular and vegetarian was good. The staff were friendly and the owners most forgiving when on arriving home I rang to apologise for taking the room key with me!!!!They get an extra star for that....!ThanksAmanda

The Hotel was very friendly and well kept. The food was very good and breakfast was more than enough. The only down side is the shower in our room (No. 4) needed updating it was very slow and either boiling hot or cold, a power shower would be required and also there was no mirror in the main part of the room for blow drying my hair or doing my make up. These were the only downside otherwise a lovely place.
